November 10, 2024, Baku, Azerbaijan — 33 cities, including Los Angeles, Amsterdam and Edinburgh have endorsed the call for a global Plant Based Treaty to align the food system to the Paris Agreement as well as implement best practices in plant-based food policy at the local level.
The COP29 demand is simple: Food policy is 30 years behind energy. We must start negotiations for a global Plant Based Treaty to add to the UN Paris Climate Agreement to address ⅓ of greenhouse gas emissions from the food systems. It will further protect our planetary boundaries by guiding the human community back to plant-based food systems.

The press conference will include the case studies of Edinburgh, and Amsterdam. Edinburgh endorsed Plant Based Treaty in 2023 and is introducing carbon labelling into schools and universities. Amsterdam endorsed the Plant Based Treaty in 2024 and will enter an agreement with major employers, public institutions such as hospitals, community centres, and care institutions to introduce Vegan Fridays in public institutions and for the city to reach a 60/40 plant-based-to-animal protein ratio by 2030.
